I think we need to accurately re-assess the poverty line, and also taxes, to reflect the actual amount needed to live and support a family.

Also, this is one big reason why people aren't having kids.

But there are things that make it harder, too, that are very common: student loans, chronic illnesses/disability, supporting aging parents.

You can patch up the difference if you live near transit and can drive less or not at all. You can plug a big hole if you have trusted caretakers who will babysit your kids for free.
