The purpose of a system is what it does. Yes other types of businesses exist (b corps, co-ops, etc.) but that doesn't mean it's how the system as a whole operates. What % of the total number of businesses are of those types? Just because they're defined doesn't mean they shape the material reality.

Absolutely not. Public companies aren't legally required to maximize profits, but institutional investors (hedge funds etc.) hold significant stakes and demand returns. Their voting power and profit-driven goals compel corporations to prioritize profits, making it a practical reality, not a myth.

I admire Parenti so much because despite being articulate and well-referenced, his writing is very accessible to regular people. His intentionality in this is truly commendable. I'd recommend randomly picking up any of his work and learning a thousand new things. He's such an underrated scholar
