Retro stuff and random things. FastDoom developer.
2025 Endurance Drivers Championship completed. What started as a childhood game (IndyCar Racing, Gran Turismo 2, …) ended up becoming reality. A dream come true, I’m eternally grateful. And on top of that, we finished third in our category!

Ayer fue un buen día 😁

Holy bananas! I’ve found the CPU that gets the biggest FPS boost from the new code. I didn’t expect this at all! The IDT WinChip 200 is the winner, with nearly a 35% performance increase: from 110 FPS to 150 FPS in FDOOMVBR, and from 33 FPS to 49 FPS in FDM400R

Some new results comparing the Pentium 166 and the Pentium 166 MMX (thanks, Néstor!). I think this clearly shows that at higher frequencies, the original P54CS hits a barrier that was fixed in the P55C.

I think I’ve found a way to optimize the R_DrawSpanBackbuffer and R_DrawSpanVBE2 functions in FastDoom for Intel Pentium and AMD K6 processors by avoiding the SHLD instruction (it’s used twice per pixel drawn).

DOSBox-X feels slow? Forget it. Try DOSEMU2. Mother of God. (FastDoom VESA 1600x1200 mode on my laptop with an Intel i5-7440HQ)

DOSBox-X: 14 fps
DOSEMU2: 197 fps

Playing TIE Fighter on a 65 inch display is just too awesome

The Radeon VII works great with FluidX3D software. It's even faster than some newer cards, the HBM vram performs excellently here. Definitely a really good purchase for only 300 euros.

Seems my 6700k doesn't like this Radeon Instinct MI25. At least the card is detected. Will try on my Ryzen 5900x, i'm pretty sure it requires ReBAR support.

There is something *very wrong* in the VBE modes of my Radeon Pro VII. Guess I'll have to add a bpp selector #FastDOOM

Happy 10th anniversary Besiege! My machine still breaks the game in very funny ways 😁

Today, I did something a bit different from retro computing. My other passion is racing, and today I had my first test at the Kotarr circuit.

WTF, Evergreen built a 486-to-dual-486 adapter? Is anyone up for recreating this idea? Now I feel like optimizing FastDoom for SMP 😂

Also it doesn't like ReactOS 😂

Haiku is a no-no for my Compaq NX7300 (borh 32bit and 64bit crash)

Another MIDI synth that supports display/bitmap SysEx messages, the Korg NS5R. Again, not a cheap device nowadays.

Aaaaand Yamaha MU50/MU80 support will also be available in FastDoom 😁 #DOScember

Aaaaand it's working! 😄😄

So the Roland SC-55 display dot data command is... weird as f*ck. The display is 16x16 monochrome, but the data is divided in blocks of 5 pixels (00-31) ordered by column first. I'll create a python script so I can convert easily 16x16 images to this SysEx format.

Lo de la IA es una cosa... 🤣

I forgot how slow Cyrix MediaGX cpu's are. No L2 cache, a 5x86 core and shared memory with the GPU. #DOScember

Sending MT32 display messages... done! 😁 #DOScember #FastDoom
