Carla Jean Moss (Kelly McDonald) in the Coen Brothers’ “No Country for Old Men.” In this scene she is confront by the deranged killer Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), who has already killed her husband Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin). Anton, to give her a chance, flips a coin, as he’s has done with a few other characters he has killed and one he has spared. He asks Carla Jean to call it. Carla Jean refuses, saying that Chigurh is crazy and that he, not the coin or fate, which Chigurh claims to be an agent of, who decides if she’ll die or not. She represents a rejection of false dichotomies.

Cover of Henri Pirenne’s “Mohammed and Charlemagne” Pirenne’s thesis is that there really was no civilizational collapse in the western Roman Empire after the Fall of Rome. Rather, Germanic kings maintained Roman customs and considered themselves in some ways inheritors of Roman authority, educating their sons in Roman style, and subservient to varying degrees to the eastern empire. More crucially, trade and consumption ah its and urban ways remained more or less unchanged. In Pirenne’s view, it was the rise of the Muslim empire that brought about the end of the Roman period in the west, as it disrupted the traditional trade routes which had allowed for Roman economic and social habits to persist after there ceased to be a person in Rome claiming the title of Emperor. With the rise of Charlemagne claiming the title of emperor, in opposition to the Bryzantine emperor, Western Europe had finally and definitively departed from the Roman era.

To care for people? They literally started and ran them at the close of the classical era, because you know, Christian charity, caring for the sick, corporal acts of mercy etc. It’s the *secular* hospital that is a modern thing. The issue isn’t religious groups doing things but doing them bigotedly

Remembering now how apparently multiple readers of The Hobbit, both in Tolkien’s time and recently, have pictured the Shirefolk as a kind of rabbit people based on the sparse descriptions of them (large hairy feet, live in holes), much to Professor Jirt’s consternation.
