Subtitles are especially important when the programs are dubbed into english. Many time the subtitles won't match what is being said, providing important subtext

There was good ol boy stuff & opportunities not available to me as a white guy. Day to day, I was allowed latitude other employees weren't.
I had weaponized my being non bi-lingual. I certainly used my skills & knowledge as leverage to set terms of employment to my advantage.

I worked for many years in a plant owned operated & mostly staffed by Mexicans. There were meetings where there was a translators for me being the only one who didn't speak Spanish.
