Southasia remembers Dr. Manmohan Singh: A bridge-builder and peacemaker
Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India 2004 - 2014, passed away on Thursday in New Delhi at the age of 92. Under his leadership, India, the largest democracy in the world, experienced an economic boom. But he never forgot his roots in the village of Gah, Punjab, where he was born in 1932, an area allocated to Pakistan after the Partition of 1947. Dr Singh was a staunch supporter of building better relations with Pakistan. However, not everyone believed in this dream and certain forces worked behind the scenes to keep them apart. A man raised in both worlds, he spoke Hindustani, writing his speeches in the Urdu script. Personal recollections from Dr Syeda Hameed and Lalita Ramdas, founder members and advisors to the Southasia Peace Action Network.

Whatever facts or non-facts get pushed out, it is up to us, citizens who are news producers and consumers through our social media apps, to be the change. The Social and Digital Media Ethics Code and Pledge is a step in this direction.
Fact-checking starts with self-accountability
There is no penalty, policing, or monitoring of how users are implementing this pledge. The hope is that users will review and engage in regular self-assessments to ensure adherence to the principles outlined in the Pledge.

With the ‘fifth season’ – smog in northern India and Pakistan – catalysing a major health crisis that is reducing life expectancy in cities like Delhi and Lahore, cross-border conversations on air pollution and cooperation for possible solutions might not be avoidable for too long.
