🎧 On @newstalkfm.bsky.social for an in-depth conversation about the deportation of Ukrainian children by Russia.

Since 2022, at least 20 000 children have been abducted, in a process of acculturation & russification, & many were forcibly sent to military camps.

🔴 Last night in Kyiv, Russia killed at least four people, including two children, and injured at least 30 others in its strikes against Kyiv.

They have also damaged more than 30 sites, including railway infrastructure in their bid to destroy Ukraine & subjugate it into capitulation.

🔴 Downtown Kyiv after Russia demonstrated once again its appetite for peace.

Why this particular site is important:

- residential buildings
- offices
- HQ of the EU embassy in Ukraine (damaged)

What takes the most energy isn't living under bombs, losing people to war or even reporting on it. It is to see many people choosing not to see, not to be vocal about war crimes, & fool themselves into believing that Russia is genuine in negotiations — just so they can continue living a normal life.

It's terrifying to see how many people are unable to grasp the extent of the crimes Russia commits daily, how easily they hide behind 'both sides' narratives. It's like walking in a tick fog. It's terrifying to report on horrific news & be met with, 'But are you sure this war crime really happened?

In the public sphere, lines between 'both sides' have become alarmingly blurred. Yet nothing has changed: Russia still attacks Ukraine to expand its territory, murders prisoners, kills Ukrainian civilians, traffics Ukrainian children. Ukrainians are not being unreasonable for defending themselve.

I must be living in an alternate reality, where children are catalogued, where journalists are killed in captivity, where 100s of drones are routinely thrown at Ukraine, because the more I voice those news, the more they are met with indifference or with this: "are Ukrainians hopeful about peace"?

I study a failed state for a living

The people who hold power aren't the ones with pieces of paper; they're the ones who can credibly organize the use of force

Outside of militias, ordinary people get what they want by striking or blocking important roads

Putin is holding the ceasefire proposal hostage & is attempting to extract preemptive concessions ahead of formal negotiations to end the war. Putin refused to accept the ceasefire proposal on its own terms and is instead demanding more conditions that would contribute directly to his war aims. 1/3
