Markets want certainty, stability, and predictability. That's how businesses plan, hire, and grow. What they don't want is an unstable narcissist playing economic roulette on social media.
Don't be fooled, tariffs are still much higher on the world than before he was inaugurated.

At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable. Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs, and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately. The idea that Trump's threats against Ukraine, Canada and Greenland are a resource grab sounds reassuringly logical. Say what you will about the tenets of extractive imperialism, at least it's an ethos.

It's also demonstrably not true, I write.
It is easy to imagine that this is part of a larger plan to take control of critical minerals and oil in order to achieve resource dominance over China and the OPEC countries. However evil it may be, at least it sounds reassuringly logical. It's also definitely not true. And not just because Mr. Trump has never shown himself able to sustain any long-term plan or narrative beyond a suite of grievances and reactions. More importantly, there is no significant new resource revenue to be gained for U.S. mining and drilling companies by doing any of these things. To the extent that unexploited wealth exists below the ground in these places, U.S. companies already had about as much access to it as they ever needed. There is no U.S. resource lobby arguing for the annexation of sovereign countries, or for the extortion of Ukraine. The Ukraine "minerals deal" does not excite U.S. investors. Although often portrayed as a Trump administration ploy to strip Ukraine of its assets while ratifying Russia's invasion and occupation - and there are signs Mr. Trump sometimes sees it this way - it was in fact proposed and promoted by Mr. Zelensky himself. American firms had been active players in the Donbas region for decades before Russia seized it in 2014 and were still mining in other eastern districts on the eve of the 2022 full-scale invasion. The return of foreign mining interests would be welcome news to Kyiv. But it's unlikely the deal would cause any rush by the U.S. to dig or drill there. "Postwar Ukraine won't be the first choice for new mines," Jonathan Hykawy, president of the Toronto-based mineral-wealth research and consultancy firm Stormcrow Capital Ltd., told me. "With many of these materials, there are deposits and prospective deposits elsewhere in the world that are not in active or former war zones. You would think that the geopolitical uncertainty would make Ukraine a less desirable place to invest, compared to, say, the California-Nevada border in the U.S. for rare earths, or Northern Ontario or Northern Quebec for lithium." Vladimir Putin has shown little interest in exploiting Ukraine's resources and did not cite them as reasons for his two invasions, despite the theoretical potential of its reserves. The fact is, seizing control of a country does not make its resources more accessible, valuable or profitable to you - quite the contrary, it drives up the cost of exploration and drives down margins during the act of occupation and often for decades after. Americans currently have about as easy access to the mineral and petroleum reserves of Canada and Greenland as they ever will. There are more than 900 U.S. companies operating in Alberta's oil patch, and the largest proposed source of exploration funding for Ontario's Ring of Fire critical-minerals site was the U.S. Department of Defence. Greenland grants mining licences to foreign firms, though so far only one U.S. company has taken them up on it, since it's not seen as very profitable. An attempt to annex either landmass, and the inevitable population-wide uprising and guerilla-warfare battle against any American presence, would erase any profit margin for decades. Free trade is a far better way to secure mineral supplies.

Just moments before the blowup with Mr. Rubio, Mr. Musk and the transportation secretary, Sean Duffy, went back and forth about the state of the Federal Aviation Administration's equipment for tracking airplanes and what kind of fix is needed. Howard Lutnick, the commerce secretary, jumped in to support Mr. Musk. Mr. Duffy said the young staff of DOGE was trying to lay off air traffic controllers. What am I supposed to do? Mr. Duffy said. I have multiple plane crashes to deal with now, and your people want me to fire air traffic controllers?

Appeal to the Congress from Former Secretaries of Defense February 27*, 2025 We are deeply alarmed by President Trump's recent dismissals of several senior U.S. military leaders. We write to urge the U.S. Congress to hold Mr. Trump to account for these reckless actions and to exercise fully its Constitutional oversight responsibilities. The President offered no justification for his actions, even though he had nominated these officers for previous positions and the Senate had approved them. These officers' exemplary operational and combat experience, as well as the coming dismissals of the Judge Advocates General of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force, make clear that none of this was about warfighting. Mr. Trump's dismissals raise troubling questions about the administration's desire to politicize the military and to remove legal constraints on the President's power. We, like many Americans -- including many troops -- are therefore left to conclude that these leaders are being fired for purely partisan reasons. As former Secretaries of Defense, we call on both the House and the Senate to hold immediate hearings to assess the national security implications of Mr. Trump's dismissals. The House and Senate should demand that the administration justify each firing and fully explain why it violated Congress' legislative intent that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff complete a four-year term in office. General C.Q. Brown Jr. had not yet completed two years in the job. In the meantime, Senators should refuse to confirm any new Defense Department nominations, including that of retired Lt. General Dan Caine as the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. President Trump's actions undermine our all-volunteer force and weaken our national security. Talented Americans may be far less likely to choose a life of military service if they believe they will be held to a political standard. Those currently serving may grow cautious of speaking truth to power or they could erode good order and discipline by taking political actions in uniform. And the public's traditionally high trust in the armed forces could begin to wither. The United States cannot afford to have our military infected by partisan politics and distracted from its core mission of defending the nation. As George Washington warned Alexander Hamilton in 1783, after Hamilton had pressed military officers to insert themselves into domestic politics, "The Army is a dangerous instrument to play with." We're not asking members of Congress to do us a favor; we're asking them to do their jobs. We're urging them to take George Washington's warning to heart. William J.
