This is a really cool article, and this section really hit hard as an Indian-American who’s struggled a lot with the same feelings about butter chicken (shit slaps, to be clear)

i turn 2’d a hogaak player at a pro tour with this back in the one when it was possible to do that in modern. the list i put together was horrifically bad and looting got banned the next month so my comp magic dreams died but i did make day 2 then which was cool

The first part of a writing snapshot titled “Home // Back”: I want to be home, but I don’t want to go back. I want to run away, start a whole new life where I feel safe to be myself. This shouldn’t be so much to ask, but I must ask for it elsewhere. I hate how much leaving felt right - how much I could see myself finding a home in every place I visited, even as I was too timid to really explore any of them enough. I already want to leave again. The desire tastes like cowardice - swallowing saliva that burns my throat, only to be replenished over and over again. It feels wrong that I should leave, when so many cannot. Why can I not stay and fight? Why can I not lay myself down for the cause? The second part of a writing snapshot titled “Home // Back”: It feels strange to choose not to suffer. I have spent so many years accepting pain, it feels only natural. I hadn’t even processed how much so, until writing this line. But I don’t want to hurt like this, and I know now that I don’t have to. I must go back. I need to be home again. But I cannot forget this. I cannot let myself rot when I have the means to thrive. I will not let my life begin and end in Texas.

Also, here’s some writing I’ve done over the course of the trip. They’re mostly snapshots of specific thoughts, but I’m pretty happy with them. I haven’t yet fully started journaling (though I try to often), but these have been good to write.
A writing snapshot titled “Minnesota”: The first thing I realized about being in Minnesota was that the leaves on the trees were a different shape. It wasn’t a big detail at all - I wasn’t here to look at trees, I was here for a convention I ended up being too scared to fully participate in. And the difference in trees probably helped cause my allergy hell that made the week a good bit more frustrating. But it was such a simple way for me to learn - this isn’t home. This is somewhere new. Maybe you can see shades of home in the cracks, but that’s still through your Texas-tinted glasses. I don’t think it was a bad lesson, I knew it was coming, but it still hit hard. There were plenty of other signs - the accents, the speed limits, the flags - but the thing I can’t stop thinking about is the way the leaves were different. A writing snapshot titled “Chicago”: It’s hard to compress the feeling of seeing friends for the first time into words. I hardly want to try, there’s just such energy in the act and I’m not strong enough a writer to capture it. But it’s best described in the way time shifts. Within minutes, it feels like hanging out in person has been natural for years. The moments slip by, the days pass too soon, but the months and years of talking on the phone make it feel so simple, like you’ve known them for lifetimes. Love y’all so much. Live music saves lives. A writing snapshot titled “Denver”: I already knew this, but being right in the center of a city makes it impossible to ignore people. The people you room with, the people you don’t want to recognize you at shows, the people making public transit work. The people left on the streets every night. The people who created a world that chooses not to house and feed everyone. The people who deserve better and the people who deserve so much worse. Living in the suburbs lets you escape people so easily. I don’t think I can stay in Texas. A writing snapshot titled “Vancouver”: The weirdest and coolest thing about being an adult is that sometimes you can just choose to do things you want. I’m writing this earlier than usual, because I can’t wait on this idea like I have with everything until now. I don’t think I can stomach waiting any longer. I know I should be able to just get through this year, let everything settle. But now that I’ve seen elsewhere, how can I just go back? I know I have people, I have the resources, and I have the ability to learn the rest as I go. It feels absurd trading expected security for the unknown - but I’ve done it before. I don’t think this is the “right” choice, I don’t know if I’ll even make it. But I don’t think I can suffocate in Texas another year. I think I wanna choose to just do something.

been a while since i was on here since i’ve been traveling, but popping my head in to post a bit of writing i’ve been doing and then disappear for a bit bc im trying not to doomscroll here

I’m writing this earlier than usual, because I can’t wait on this idea like I have with everything until now. I don’t think I can stomach waiting any longer. I know I should be able to just get through this year, let everything settle. But now that I’ve seen elsewhere, how can I just go back? I know I have people, I have the resources, and I have the ability to learn the rest as I go. It feels absurd trading expected security for the unknown - but I’ve done it before. being an adult is so weird, here’s a poem about me buying a 30 oz bag of werther’s originals
Caramels (a poem) I’ve been crushing caramels between my teeth. It’s mostly harmless, but it’s wasteful; Going through candies by the handful, Feeling them crack against the enamel. I’m too impatient for these – I can’t stand The intrusion in my mouth, even if I lose it Once I bite down. Running over the jagged results with my tongue, I find the cuts too clean. I’m trying now to let this one be, but I feel the urge Creep over my mind – tear this one apart too. Feel the dissatisfaction, and go for the next one anyways. Break this, and maybe you’ll burn your pain out Before you choose to break a bone.

been thinking a lot about what it means to me to be Texan, and how much it hurts knowing i probably can’t stay here even if i have nowhere else to go. not sure that posting writing like this will be common but im putting it out here now at least
Lone Stars I love being Texan. Despite everything This is my home. It’s the only one I know. I was born in a place I’ll say is Dallas, Unless you’re local enough to know it’s Lewisville, and I’ve always lived here. I can’t imagine Living anywhere else. Texans are proud. Proud to be Texan, proud of everything remotely Texan. Dr. Pepper in their veins, Whataburger in their stomachs, and Buc-ees in their minds. The worst of us turn that pride towards hate. You know the image, A redneck with a red hat Who loves God, beer, guns and football And hates everything else. (1/3) But that is not what Texas is to me. To me, Texas is going to the homecoming dance instead of prom. It’s celebrating the 2 inches of snow you get in a year. It’s watching your team lose yet again, And yelling at the TV but still rooting for them. It’s absurdly large burgers and brisket, It’s funnel cakes at the state fair, it’s rides at Six Flags that make you hurl and laugh about it. It’s the vast emptinesses between small towns, Where you can go 100 because no one’s gonna see, Where the world feels endlessly open And free. It’s driving by the city at night, watching the ball spinning Like its own lone star. This is my home. I love it. (2/3) Despite everything I say about Texas, I’m still unsure how long I can stay As the ones who preach hate take control, As I watch the home I love so dearly be twisted against me, I ask myself whether I need to leave: Whether I can stay and watch my state crumble further, trying to save what I can; Or if I run now while I can, and reorient myself at a new origin point.
