A bit of throwing stones at a glass house here but saw this as the Milwaukee Museum of Art today. A sugar bowl touting its East India Sugar not slave labor. Feels like saying (in 2010) we don't shop at Walmart, we go to Target.
White sugar bowl with gold text "East India Sugar, not made by Slaves" Sugar bowl, circa 1820 Staffordshire, Great Britain Blue-glazed earthenware with gilt lettering The Chipstone Foundation, 1999.22.a-b "What is sweet in the morning, is bitter in the evening" Frederick Douglass, My Bondage and My Freedom, 1855 The phrase "East India Sugar not made by Slaves" printed on this sugar bowl was meant as a statement of protest against the consumption of Caribbean sugar produced by enslaved labor. The British East India Company imported sugar made by workers in India as an ethical alternative, despite poor working conditions there. In 1828 the abolitionist William Naish wrote that those who consumed Indian sugar were "undermining the work of slavery, in the safest, most easy, and effectual manner, in which it can be done." The sugar bowl this represents a relatively passive branch of the abolitionist movement that advocated for gradually increasing economic pressures. Fredrick Douglass and many other activists argued instead that immediete and direct action was required to confront the human crisis of slavery.
