ordered a copy of a childhood favorite book. shocked by the unconscionable cover downgrade
a green woodland on rolling hills, lightly dappled in the orange of early autumn, stretches from a red stone citadel to a grey and distant sky. Inset on this backdrop is the good stuff. Three heroic figures stand on the crest of a hill. A mole with a heavy pack and his snout thrust out into the wind, as if pensively smelling the air. A jovial mouse in swanky, gold trimmed coat and hat plays a flute. I mean he's really going at it. possibly misreading the mood. At the center is a solemn mouse. A red cloak billows in the wind as he stands, walking staff in hand. Hanging from a rope around his neck is a broken sword. The whole thing is composed so that the sword is basically at the center of the whole cover. it draws your eyes in immediately. What's the deal with the sword? Immediately captures the imagination, especially of the 10 year old me at the local library 20ish years ago. a silhouette of a cat on a red circle trimmed with a ring of gold. the background is a blue color corrected stock photo of a castle on a lake. it kinda makes sense if you've already read the book. the cat looks like the first draft of a high school sports team logo. some evil force, perhaps a ghost or devil or something, has whispered to the graphic designer that lens flares belong on the cover of a fantasy book about a woodland mouse folk hero who reforges his father's sword in a mountain called Salamandastron
