Women are more likely than men to state a racial preference. Consistent with prior research, they are also more likely to prefer to date whites only; among those with an expressed preference, approximately 64% of white women prefer whites only compared to only about 29% of white men. Accordingly, white women are more likely then white men to exclude certain racial groups from dating consideration. Over 90% of white women who state a racial preference prefer not to date East Indians, Middle Easterners, Asians, and blacks. White men with stated racial preferences, in contrast, only prefer not to date one group at levels above 90%: black women. As predicted by assimilation theory, East Indians and Middle Easterners (more recent immigrant groups) are excluded more than Native Americans, Latinos, and Asians, by both white men and women. However, racial hierarchy theories would predict that blacks are the least preferred group, and this is only the case for white men. Indeed, the hierarchies of whom daters prefer vary considerably by gender. Black women are the least preferred racial group for white men; however, black men are only the fourth most excluded group for white women (behind East Indian, Middle Eastern, and Asian men). In contrast, Asians are one of the top three most excluded groups by white women, while Asians are among the least excluded groups by white men. These findings do not support racial–economic exchange theories, since groups with lower than average economic statuses—Latinos and blacks—are more preferred by white women as dates than those with higher than average economic statuses—Asians, Middle Easterners, and East Indians. The findings of different racial hierarchies for white men and women, in which Asian women rank higher for white men and black men rank higher for white women, do support theories focused on racialized sexualities.

Conçue sur le modèle de la fête de la musique, cette initiative a l’ambition de montrer l’internet sous un jour moins froid que celui des écrans d’ordinateur. Comme le rappellent les organisateurs : c’est une fête.
