The question for Taiwan and every other US ally is now: How can you build up a deterrence that is independent of US and fast. Taiwan might not have enough time.

Liberum veto worked so well last time. EU needs to move to majority decision in all foreign politics. Otherwise EU countries will always be on the menu, not at the table when geopolitics is concerned.

One more reason to prioritize Ukraine's own or European weapons production whenever possible.

We are back in February. What can you expect when you let a clueless sociopath meet a fully trained KGB officer.

No they don't. This is what they voted for.

Unintended, not unexpected.

Admitting being wrong publicly is always respectable. Quite difficult to do for most people.

It is so hypocritical that criminals are imprisoned. If you support freedom you should support freedom for all!!

To seriously move away from two party system you would need to have proportional elections. Maybe each state as a single multi-representative district. Pretty similar to the elections of the European Union Parliament.

Next I'll be talking only about House elections. Logic for Presidency and Senate would be different. Ranked choice would give voters possibility to give a thumb up for a third party without loosing their voice in the grand battle between Republicans and Democrats.

I don't know what is the origin for this polarization, but I have some ideas of contributing factors. One is first-past-the-post / two party election system. Most Americans can't cross the Democrat-Republican threshold, so they have only one option in elections. A reform is 150 years overdue.

I'm not concerned about the current MAGA sycophants. The next threat is likely to be something else. I'm mostly concerned about the extreme polarization, where some people (now mostly MAGA) think that it is better burn the world than let the other side have a win.

I hope that Trump cult is just a freak event in history, but I'm afraid that it is more likely that it is just a symptom of a deeper pathology. A pathology that can produce other probably different symptoms in future.
March 28, 2025 at 9:09 PM
I have the highest sympathy and respect to anybody resisting autocracy, but the rest of the world needs to deal with the US president. The US system and society has put Trump to this role - twice. And there is a high risk that somebody similar will follow in future. The level of trust is low.

What Nazi Germany did was on completely different level of evil compared to US during last few years, but none of it's neighbors mistook it to a friend, so there was no betrayal. Many countries have thought that they can rely on US, but have now learned a bitter lesson.
March 28, 2025 at 5:09 AM
We started to trust Germany after about 50 years, so we might trust USA again around 2079. Now we Europeans just need to grow up fast.

You can't buy those with money, so unachievable for many fashion followers.

So with the frozen Russian assets we are in a use it or loose it situation. It is likely that Hungary will veto the extension of the sanctions within the next year. Russia could transfer them home within 24 hours of the failure to extend. Only confiscated property would be out of Russian reach.

Would a narcissist like Trump be able to have this kind of realization? Or would he rather twist the reality to match his self image?
Anyway, we need to work from the assumption that Trump will always have a very soft spot for Putin. Any change for this would be a positive surprise.
March 15, 2025 at 9:35 AM
So according to this we are very unlikely to see Trump to turn against Putin ever? Just psychologically too difficult?
