Maritime, port and ship pollution, decarbonization, shore power, electrification, climate, transportation, cruise, cargo, Brooklyn NYC and beyond. And some politics (as is required if you care about this planet 🌏 ).

The shore power jib (crane) is no longer at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal. What’s going on? Has the long promised “mobile” jib been put into service? Is every ship now idling 24/7, burning dirty diesel fuel, while docked at the terminal? NYCEDC?

How bout going back and kicking the tires of the morgue trucks that lined the Brooklyn waterfront?

The same ship has been doing the same thing in Brooklyn ever since it started home posting here. This video is from earlier this month. As you say, the Coast Guard is supposed to enforce the emissions rules, but there’s no clear way to get them to respond to violations like these.

This is good, I guess. But what benefit do these huge ships bring when they invade beautiful little coastal villages like Skagen, Denmark? Or Venice? Or Key West? Or Juneau, Alaska? www.seatrade-cruise.com/ports-destin...

Yeah, Carnival is a real environmental hero. 🤷‍♂️ Suggestion: Stop using scrubbers, which INCREASE fuel consumption. Stop burning the dirtiest diesel on the planet. Start investing in non fossil fuels, electrification, and true climate solutions.

Take this survey! PortSide New York would like to know what YOU want to know about the maritime aspects of the Brooklyn Maritime Terminal planning process, currently under way on the #RedHook/ Columbia Street waterfront.

One of Musk’s favorite phrases is “Make Orwell Fiction Again”. I mean, the lack of self awareness is mind boggling.

And here in NYC, @NYCEDC has "postponed" plans to build shore power at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. NYC residents continue to endure the health and climate impacts of ship pollution, while the cruise industry makes billions in profits. Shameful! w42st.com/post/plans-...

A reminder that Port Miami now has shore power with the ability "to connect 21 individual vessels .. for a total of 350 vessel calls" per year. Brooklyn's yet-to-be-upgraded system can only connect to 20% of ship visits www.msn.com/en-us/trave...

A BIG win in the UK for @opp_green 🙌! When will cruise lines doing business in the US be forced to stop misleading the public about fossil LNG being a “green”, “cleaner” fuel?

@foeus.bsky.social: You might want to rethink booking a cruise as this year’s Christmas present.
Our 2024 #CruiseShipReportCard shows that this industry remains one of the most harmful forms of travel for the environment & human health

The annual “Cruise Ship Report Card”, released by Friends of the Earth, reveals that five cruise lines, all under the Carnival Corporation umbrella, received failing grades, while another eight cruise lines were rated with D’s. #RethinkCruiseTourism #climate #health @foeus.bsky.social

My pinned Tweet from March on "Xitter", celebrating the passing of "Our Air Our Water Act" We noted that this law wasn't a silver bullet in ridding our city of the scourge of cruise ship pollution. But NYCEDC inaction continues to disappoint, allowing ships to keep burning dirty diesel in port 😡
November 18, 2024 at 7:00 PM
When "Our Air Our Water Act" passed in March, NYCEDC was directed to add shore power requirements to NYC cruise contracts – to be signed in the summer. EDC also committed to upgrading Brooklyn's shore power system by end '24. None of this happened. CM Alexa Aviles has questions!! #shorepower #NYCEDC
