I’m an author and former high school librarian. My novel “Keep Sweet,” about escape from a cult, launches June 2025. I write each week about banned books and other literary topics on my Substack “Be a Cactus.” I love anything related to dogs or the nature.
Across the country, public libraries are running “food for fines” campaigns for Thanksgiving and the Holidays.

When Libraries Do More Than Congress: Food-for-Fines in American Libraries
While Congress debates cutting SNAP benefits, local librarians are stocking food pantries, organizing donation drives, and ensuring that struggling families don’t walk away empty-handed.

Ah—the end game. Private prisons with no-bid contracts in a ‘gold rush’ of setting their own prices to imprison immigrants. As always, it’s about greed and $$$$$.

My son Patrick has a chapbook out from Bamboo Dart Press. We are placing copies in Little Free Libraries in many places with help from friends. The first copy is out in Redlands on the corner of Cypress and Center. More cities to come!

In the 90s, I genuinely thought the Internet would cure loneliness. But it turns out that for me anyway the Internet addresses loneliness the way alcohol addresses anxiety.

I loved the chance to be on Alyson Shelton’s “Where I’m From” podcast today. It was on Instagram, so you can watch me turn my iPad around and then discuss my “I Am From” poem. Creating the poem based on a specific form was so much fun and talking about it was a blast!

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.
