"Förfäder Talar Genom Skogen - Ancestors Speak Through The Forest" is a large-scale monoprint created with a limited palette of Intaglio inks. This piece is an exploration of the subconscious, channelling the unseen energies of nature to reflect on how different elements communicate with one another. I believe that our ancestors continue to speak through the forest, and these Nordic trees represent a powerful dialogue between nature and humanity. To the left of the image, an abstract outline of a medieval ship begins to emerge, adding to the growing maritime theme that naturally arises in this piece. This theme connects to the landscape of the High Coast in Sweden, with its 52 forests, 52 lakes, and 52 mountains. This ongoing series captures both the serenity and mystery of the natural world, inviting viewers to listen to the whispers of the past through the ancient forest. As I explore the maritime theme, I’ve discovered the countless shipwrecks lying along the Swedish coast—remnants of medieval merchant ships, crafted from wood, a living material. Wood and water, two symbols of life and fluidity, intertwine here to evoke the consciousness of memory and journey. This large-scale drypoint etching captures the dynamic transformation of the landscape along the High Coast of Sweden, in the Ångermanland province, near the Gulf of Bothnia. The image plays with the intricate relationship between line and tone, where the deliberate use of heavier ink in some areas adds a rich, textured surface-tone, creating a sense of depth and balance. The composition reflects the evolving landscape, where the movement of waves and the sea's past presence are now replaced by a raised seabed, accessible to those who can walk on it. This change is a direct result of the melting icecaps, which have caused the land to rise by 300 meters since the Ice Age. The etching explores this merging of land and water, symbolising the ongoing natural transformation of the environment. Gushul Artist Residency through University of Lethbridge Location: Gushul Studio, Blairmore, Alberta, Canada The Gushul Studio, established in 1921 by Thomas and Lena Gushul, was the only family-run photographic studio of its kind in the region. Originally from Western Ukraine, Thomas and Lena emigrated to Canada in 1906, where they documented the Coal Mining Industry and became Alberta’s most prolific and well-known photographers. Their legacy lives on in this unique space, which combines history with artistry. The artist residency was housed in the original studio building, which featured vaulted clerestory windows that flooded the space with abundant northern light. This created a perfect environment for large-scale works and deep creative exploration. During my time at Gushul Studio, I was inspired not only by the light and history of the space but by the surrounding wilderness that was once captured through the Gushul’s lens. As a playful side note, you might spot fellow artist and photographer Jessica Raby, pretending to be a cat while crouching in the vibrant wilderness of dandelions! Her whimsical approach to art and nature added another layer of inspiration to this residency.
