#wikimedia #WMF The bots are already outcompeting humans:

"Since January 2024, we have seen the bandwidth for downloading multimedia content grow by 50%. This increase is not from human readers but largely from automated programs that scrape the Wikimedia Commons image catalogue

Terry Pratchett's "Raising Steam" is a #fantasy #book for our time. It explores extremism, resistance to diversity, and fear of the unknown.

#books2025 #bad_bug_bookclub "The Second Life of Mirielle West" is a historical fiction novel by Amanda Skenandore, inspired by the true story of America's only leper colony, Carville. Meticulously detailed but slow going.

#book #recommend "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow" by Gabrielle Zevin is a high drama & love shapes novel about the US gaming industry that is strangely addictive.
Apparently, GenZ is foregoing social media in favour of gaming.

#book #sf #recommend “Severance” (no relation to the AppleTV+ show) by Lyn Gma is a literary “coming of age” and “state of the US at the beginning of the XXI century” novel that masquerades as postapocalyptic fiction.

#manchester Yesterday's #UNITE trade union picket against #Capita, which refuses to raise wages. The company "provides consulting, transformation and digital services." Over the centuries, the form of work has changed, but the reluctance to pay workers a decent salary remains the same.

#feminism My first #book2025 is "Time of the Flies" by Claudia Pineiro. Set in Argentina, the story follows Inés, a middle-aged woman recently released from prison after serving time for a murder.

Read this instead of "The Crime and Punishment".

There is a ghost orchid, and #bladderwort subulata can be called a "ghost bladderwort". For many years, it has not produced flowers, but it forms seeds without them. And suddenly, it is a gift after the New Year.

The first rule of growing #carnivorous #plants is not to use fertilizers. The second is that you can, but you need to know exactly what kind: for sundews - only algae-derived Maxsea. Meet Drosera indica, which cannot be grown from seeds without a fertiliser.
