You don't have to use "dumb" things. Just prefer things that can be locally controlled and preferably open. Local control makes it far more likely to have a long lifespan, and being open is a good sign that it can be supported for years to come.

I think most people are just in survival mode hoping this will end in a few years. I did see the disturbing authoritarian future to come in Twilight Zone - The Obsolete Man and many other episodes.
