"On paper, RED ROOMS is the ideal horror movie for a person like me, which is to say, a coward. It would be a misnomer to say the film has no violence though—it is violence, a bloodless film that is rich with blood."

or American agents that'd take an Australian writer in?

Last night’s film, OUTLAND (1981). In the period between Bond & his late 1980s renaissance as older sex symbol, Sean Connery did some really Interesting films. Solid mix of low-fi SF, western & bad town noir. Could argue Connery at his best when he wasn’t firm in his footing, as seems the case here

CHRISTMAS EVE IN MILLER'S POINT is like Robert Altman and Ingmar Bergman teamed up to make a John Hughes movie. Many will not enjoy this largely plotless film that looks like a wacky Xmas comedy, but isn't. Tyler Taormina (also made HAM ON RYE) is going his own way. tinyurl.com/4xex3rxp
Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point review
Tyler Taormina’s sprawling portrait of an Italian-American family’s festive gathering in Long Island makes for an enjoyably hazy Christmas movie.

Alison’s Birthday (1981) lets you know it’s an Australian horror story through the shot of a Cold Chisel album on the floor when a seance goes haywire. At age 16, Alison (Joanne Samuel from Mad Max) is mucking around with a ouija board with a couple of school friends, and receives a warning from the other side: they’re after you, and it will happen on your 19th birthday.

There’s a masterclass sequence in Creepy (2016) that shows off Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s command with visually increasing uneasiness. A retired detective now a college professor Takakura (Hidetoshi Nishijima from Drive My Car) is working with his former partner Nogami (Masahiro Higashide) on a cold case, a missing family who disappeared five years ago. Within the university building, Takakura interviews the remaining family member, Saki (Haruna Kawaguchi) and the sequence begins in the clear afternoon, light coming in through the glass windows where we can see the students congregate in the square outside.

The Oracle (1985)
After seeing the repulsive yet effective thriller, Tenement, I was interested to see more of director Roberta Findlay’s mainstream 1980s genre work, after a previous decade of working in exploitation and pornography. The Oracle (1985) is a low-budget supernatural horror movie that uses the planchette as its hook - a silver artificial hand in a book that works like an Ouija board, in that if you guide the hand will automatically write on paper, a getaway to the other side and ghosts seeking to communicate.
