that latter part is probably made worse with the silicon valley investment. the business only makes sense with the technology being proprietary and platformitised to hell and back, thus preventing that sort of use (with some exceptions)

But it only makes sense for larger collections and also for convenience features like auto conversion otherwise you could probably still just scrape by with your approach

Honestly the big selling point for me is to just have everything in a nicer interface while still having the ability to get into the guts of the machine and tweak it to my liking. Moreover there's a separate app for music (plexamp) that's really close to Spotify (you can also link tidal to it)

The only reason I use Plex is because it has a nicer interface for music, I can also host movies on it and also so I can give my parents access with minimal fuss. It's also less of a PITA to host online access compared to jellyfin

it also doesn't make any sense. You can still put mp3s and videos on your iPhone and just set it to vibrate/ do not disturb. the only thing you are missing are ways to play cool jrpgs for the snes with a half decent control scheme

i think the great shame is that the internet was in part designed to be highly decentralized but the benefits of high centralization (at least initially) were still too high and so here we are now. Network effects baby!
