2016 —> 2025

[ #art ]
An inktober sketch from 2016 for the prompt “flight”. A scribbled dandelion with seeds flying on the wind. Drawn with shaky lines, tracing ink over pencil, and poor understanding of form. Shading is inconsistent, and the movement or flow of the picture is somewhat nonsensical. But I was a beginner artist, and honestly, it’s not a bad drawing. Nine years later, I’ve moved from ink to digital. Shown is a collection of digital sketches in red. Items are: a satin bow; an inverse relief of a flower in a shaded diamond; a stylized bunny with stars overhead; an apple cut in half; a glowing heart in the middle of a red star; a stylized two-headed flower with a thin star above it; a rendered sketch of my left hand; and a small drawing of a wall mirror, reflecting a vase with olive branches. In all of these sketches, I’ve gotten better at drawing from life or from eye, I have better grasp of form, my line strokes are confident, I can shade and imagine direction of lighting. And, I’m more creative in my designs. Most of these are not from direct reference, but from a mishmash of mind’s eye and objects or art that I’ve seen before.

trying hobonichi for the first time this year :)
A picture of my new Hobonichi Techo A6 cover. I got the Mother edition, which is a light linen with a “Franklin Badge” patch on the front. A picture of my Hobonichi open to pages for January 12 and 13. It’s blurry on purpose so you can’t read it. On the 12th is a big sticker from Catherine Unger’s emotional fruit line, a pink and yellow fruit (idk what kind) split in half with a smiley face on one and a sad face on the other. A pretty good representation of that day for me. On the 13th, I have a bunch of little notes scattered in black, blue, red, and green pens. There’s also a washi sticker of a lake view that a friend gave me. That friend got engaged, so it’s to commemorate her happy day!

My “artist bingo” sheet for 2025. The board includes topics of study, like lighting, color, anatomy, values, hands, and more. There are also spaces for drawings of my OC’s, finishing old ideas, or learning new tools like blender or silver-clay. The remaining spaces are for subjects I want to draw: tamagotchi characters, birds, landscapes, 90’s/y2k album art, plants, and textiles from Sindh (where my parents were born). We’ll see how many of these I can cross out this year!

doing a bit of early world-building for my fantasy novel idea 🌟

I took inspiration from Juan Pantoja de la Cruz’s painting ‘San Nicolás de Tolentino’. As for world-building, in my fantasy universe there are two physical realms: our modern world, and a fantasy world, separated by a thin veil of reality. Some magic users can see and manipulate this veil to cross that threshold. Doing so is dangerous as a rift may open on one side but not on the other, which can leave someone stranded if they aren’t prepared.

november sketches 🌅🍎✨
I’m using a charcoal brush in Procreate to depict a still life in my room during golden hour. Light from the window hit a small red bottle on my bookshelf at such an angle that the shadow on the wall glowed maroon and amber. I tried my best to capture this moment in time. This month has been so hard. I’m proud of myself for trying, and for continuing to create. If you’re reading this, whatever’s challenging you lately, keep trying! Don’t give up! I’m proud of you too. Another digital sketch in Procreate. I found a stock photo of a red-yellow apple with a heart carved out of it and I had to take a stab at it. This is the first time I’ve rendered an apple to this level of detail. I’m quite happy with the result. My art journey has been slow, a push and pull between the skill of my hands and of my eye. If you’re a fellow creator, remember that art is not a race. It’s okay to take time. Especially now, be kind to yourself and others around you.
