Our yummy haul from Oman - lots of dates (of course), plus frankincense coffee, date syrup, saffron, cardamom, cinnamon as well as some soaps, frankincense and myrrh.

The view from our bed in the Wahiba Sands. Sleeping under the stars was just magnificent!

The Jebel Shams in Oman. A fantastic 4WD drive to the viewpoint, where you can see the splendour of the Al Nakhur Canyon, often described as The Grand Canyon of Arabia.

Hello Oman! Exploring the Mutrah district of Muscat with its lovely corniche.

Overpriced beers at the airport again. No more booze for a while after these, as we're headed to Oman! Very excited.

Ever since we visited Guyana we wanted to try making pepperpot, a celebratory dish. A rainy old day in England gave us the perfect chance to have a go. This is an hour in, two more hours to go...

Overpriced beers? Must be at the airport. Cheeky trip to Guernsey.

Just look at those blips!

Our home-grown wine is now in the demijohn. Actually, it's in 2 demijohns as the grape harvest was so great. Currently at what we call the 'pepto-bismol stage' but it will clear. Fermenting beautifully - I think we're going to have a fantastic 'vintage' this year!

Our little vine in the English midlands has been super-generous this year. We've been making wine! (And yes, we did crush the grapes with our - clean - feet)

Smorrebrod for dinner. All home made, much home grown. We even made them rye bread!

That's still a good haul! And they look delicious. Our pear tree went crazy this year. We've also been foraging for apples in the park - it's truly fruity around here!

We're in the realms of perry making this weekend. This is a tiny proportion of our harvest! I've been making spiced pear granita (which I've made but haven't written up the recipe) and also preserved pears in brandy. Then we'll get onto making crumbles!

Some foodie projects take time. This will - eventually - be 'meta' pontack sauce: I'm making elderberry wine to turn into elderberry vinegar this year. Then next year I will make pontack sauce with elderberries and elderberry vinegar. It will be at its best 7 years later!

Experiments in sourdough. All DELICIOUS! Can't wait to make Smørrebrød with the rye loaves. #foodie #breadmaking

Earth, moon and sun - we have now seen Luke Jerram's Gaia, Museum of the Moon and Helios in our home city.

Love growing unusual fruit and veg. The buddha' fingers, ground cherry and myoga ginger are doing well this year, in spite of (or maybe because?) lack of rain.

Fantastic foodie haul from Singapore and Borneo! Now to tackle the inevitable jetlag...
July 2, 2025 at 9:34 PM
Although the reason for visiting Bako national park was to see the monkeys - proboscis, silver leaf and macaque (we saw them all but have better photos on the camera than the phone) - we also saw some snakes while hiking: venomous green pit viper and a tree snake.

Kuching in Borneo is not only delightful (we did a bicycle tour in 31C heat!) with a fascinating culture and has opportunities to see semi-wild orangutans at a local wildlife centre, it is also a centre for gastronomy. Win!

Pre-hols prep: feed the kombucha scoby, make kimchi and ferment any leftover veg.
June 19, 2025 at 8:13 AM
Loads of fantastic produce from the garden and allotment. Strawberries and elephant garlic. We're making rhubarb and rosemary wine. Our fruit trees are going to produce pears, quince and plums galore. Looks like we'll be making a lot of wine and crumble this year!
June 14, 2025 at 10:59 AM
New #foodie experiment: oak leaf wine. It's busy fermenting, so will hopefully be good! It'll take a few months to ferment and age.

Outdoor dining for the first time this year. Somen noodles with dipping sauce, accompanied by sashimi and shira-ae. Didn't catch the fish but the wasabi was home grown and the sushi ginger (gari) home made.

When this is the view from your bed, you know the Okavango Delta in Botswana is a very special place.
