Dense and continuous pine plantations fuel severe wildfires and hinder recovery 🔥

Reducing tree density can lower impacts, guiding more resilient afforestation and fire management strategies in Mediterranean ecosystems 🌲

Spain's fire-ridden summer 2025 sparked big debates about how forests are managed. Now new research in @jappliedecology.bsky.social shows that pine plantations in Spain can increase fire severity, that post-fire recovery is rare, & but that tree density management can help tinyurl.com/mf33xrt8
The legacy of pine plantations on fire severity
Our findings provide quantitative evidence that pine plantations can exacerbate fire severity under contemporary climate conditions, and that, once burned, these areas seldom recover. Effective spati....

Last day of our workshop on bias in forest restoration! The best day so far - had a fantastic time thinking about evidence use by practitioners with our great, great team. Feeling mentally destroyed but so satisfied. All topped off with some celebratory cheesecake. Perfect day.

It was a great, but challenging day discussing biases in forest restoration at our workshop today. We started with a clear plan that gradually disintegrated and we're now trying to build something stronger from the fragments. I'm fascinated to see what we come up with tomorrow!

What a great first day of our workshop on forest restoration. Today we visited native secondary forests, non-native plantations, and restored forests in Urdaibai, guided expertly by Jon Hidalgo from Fundación Lurgaia. Fantastic to get to know so many new people from different places!
