They were going to make it. No doubt about it, they were cutting it close—far closer than he would have preferred. But, as Clicker flipped the switch and the familiar tremors of the matter transporter began migrating up Drift's frame, he took Ratchet's hand, eased a little closer, and allowed himself, just for a moment, the smallest indulgence of relief. It was then, of course, that everything went horribly, devastatingly wrong. The building around them had been in bad shape since long before the reappearance of Luna 2 in the sky above Adaptica; Drift had noted, with some apprehension, the copious evidence of disrepair and neglect as they'd barreled down the old corridors towards the transporter room. While Rodimus had delayed their departure by stomping around and fuming and raging about Megatron to anyone who would listen, Drift had stood on the circular platform and uneasily watched the jagged, spreading cracks in the walls and the exposed structural elements jutting precariously from the ceiling. All the while, Cybertron's reconfigured second moon drew nearer, its devastating tractor beams reducing the sanctuary city and its citizens to nothing more than raw materials and assorted detritus. One of those columns of destruction and death had nearly reached them when Rodimus had finally given in. Drift had murmured a quick, anxious prayer as they all squeezed together in the transporter. He tried not to focus on the night sky that was clearly visible through the room's widening rifts or on the chunks of building that broke off and fell, only to be inescapably drawn in by the threatening orb looming ever closer. None of that mattered anymore, he told himself. They were going to make it. He could feel his frame beginning to dematerialize, starting at his feet, and he cast his optics to the side to check on Ratchet. It was only later, sorting through fragments of damaged memory files, that Drift was able to puzzle through what had happened. He remembered everything around him shaking, though he'd assumed that was a side effect of the machine. Knocked loose, clouds of gritty dust and tiny bits of rubble rained down from the ceiling, clattering against his armor and the platform and the floor. He recalled how half a wall was torn completely away, intensifying the cacophony of thundering and screaming and grisly crunching coming from outside. Then, there was a sharp and sudden pain at the base of his finial, the room around him seemed to be rapidly spinning, Ratchet's fingers were slipping and grasping desperately at his own— —and the next thing he knew, Drift was buried in a heap of debris struggling to bring his systems back online, and he was alone.
