The risk to life on Earth from asteroid impacts is extremely low — especially compared to, on a smaller scale, the risk to astronauts from micrometeoroid impacts on their spacecraft. That’s why spacecraft are protected by dedicated micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) shields.
