I gave a talk on Interpretability tools for Scientific ML at the wonderful Astro/AI workshop organized by @astroai.bsky.social. Who doesn't love a flowchart? But I promise the full picture, while still very incomplete, has a bit more nuance, so find my slides here if you'd like!

I feel that this doesn't even begin to describe this week

I had to get up before 🌅, but it was worth it to finally meet Dara Norman in person and get this medal for the Chambliss Astronomical Writing award at #AAS245! Please buy my now-award-winning book ok? 😀

Reminder!!! Come hear me today at 2.45pm if you are interested in revolutionary (ok, maybe just improved) representations for ocean data via the information imbalance! It’s fun (as far as conference talks go), free (if you already paid the mega reg fee), and short (without qualifiers)! #AGU24

And finally, don’t miss the talk tomorrow morning (Tuesday) by Galen McKinley (@oceancarbon.bsky.social) and collaborators, including yours truly, on the super hot topic of data requirements to assess feasibility and scaling of marine CDR efforts. 3/3

I also want to flag the poster of my postdoc Gabriele Accarino, on Friday morning, presenting super new work on custom and robust metrics to assess similarity in climate maps; we are working toward a comprehensive benchmark of maps and metrics. 2/

Chat science w/ me at #AGU24! 🧪🌊

On Fri, I’ll talk of improved representations of ocean data. We use information imbalance to create custom metrics optimized to reconstruct pCO2. We get a compact space of physical vars that aid ML modeling, dim reduction, clustering, and data valuation. 1/

Not sure if I should feel very offended or extremely seen by copilot's suggested commentary

I downloaded the game after seeing your post and love it already! I am confused about why this is not a valid entry - from the tutorial I thought I could extend and play off the extension.

Say what you want about New York but the truth is that two hrs ago I was home in my pjs and ready for a home day and now I’m seeing this amazing exhibit of cutouts by Matisse at Moma, for free as a CUNY faculty (which doesn’t make up for the fact that I’m criminally underpaid but does help a bit)

In a different role, I’m also the mom of talented artist Clara (8). She makes incredibly detailed comic books. This one’s cover is dedicated to her group of friends, “hanging with the good stuff” (amazing name if you ask me).

Had a lovely convo today with my undergrad students abt the carbon budget. We observed that language about degrees of warming may not be very relatable for a broad audience. They want words they can relate to and use with others, e.g. increased risks at (hyper)local level. This is so important. 1/2

Writing a big proposal with no deadline 😱 and I wanna share the accountability system my fab friend/colleague Thea Heimdal and I put in place:

- Pick deadline to first draft (11/15)
- Define price of failure (no ☕ for a week)
- Agree on frequency of check-ins (2/week)
- She sends me this every T/F:
