The problem is “race has some biological reality” ie something like skin color (which gets complicated for line drawing immediately) very rapidly becomes “and that’s why black people can’t be scientists”

right, there is something of a motte and bailey here. like, if “race has some biological reality” just means that phenotypes are biological, then you’re just stating a banal observation. but that is not what people mean.
