I've been saying "someone should do this" for ages and it feels like a Gotcha for me personally lmao

Anyways, it feels like it's punching down and I don't like it!

Exactly, we're here to tell a fun, interesting story and have our characters get to know each other. We have to be able to trust that the other people at the table are as interested in our characters as we are theirs.

If I tell her to stop, though, she'll react like I've slapped her so I have two choices: ruin my mom's week or ignore the constant stream of buzzing phone messages. :/

We'd been playing for a while before this new player joined. If they'd told us when we introduced them to the story, I'd have happily swapped characters.

Yeah, sometimes people don't realize that what they really want out of D&D is to Feel Superior and that isn't conducive to storytelling 🙃

The "coolness" of any meme phrase has an inverse relationship w/ its acceptance into the lexicons of group members outside of the origin group. Here, quotes serve to call attention to the user's unfamiliarity w/ the phrase and status as a member of an outgroup, tanking its coolness faster.

Jeez the strobe light makes it so much worse than I imagined

I asked what would be acceptable vs unacceptable in future so we could still interact with my backstory, but the only suggestion they made was that they'd leave the room wholesale whenever anything related was mentioned. So now I essentially can't RP anything related to my backstory :/

Fairly normal D&D horror fare that the new player okayed. One session, while I was describing my girl's spiritual weapon manifesting as her former order's ritual knife and prepping for some fun emotional rp, new player fled the room, then revealed they were triggered by all sui mentions.

We had a mini Session Zero for the new player (we were very straightforward about running a horror campaign), described our characters' stories, and specifically asked about triggers. My Shadar-Kai grave cleric's backstory involves her mother, the leader of a death-cult, committing ritual sui.

To hear that someone doesn't want to play with a party member with such a normal narrative twist feels so odd to me, tbqh. In my case, the conflict arose when a new player who didn't tell us that interacting with a core facet of my character's backstory would be triggering for them.
