Well since we’re talking about 1956, I’ll point out that it was not under Stalin that the Soviet Union sent troops into Hungary, but under Khrushchev, who denounced Stalin.

There are many whom I know and grew up around, who lived through and took part in this event. Some joined for the right reasons, some not. Some are good at heart, some think they deserve more than others, and are fine with tyranny so long as they benefit from it. And all of them are my family. (End)

The uprising was in fact violent. Both sides of the conflict used violence as a means to achieve their goals. My grandfather recounted an event when he and a few other men were attacking a police station. Two ÁVH were inside. One was shot during the attack, but the other was dragged out…(5)

It is also true however, that fascists, reactionaries, and western-influenced actors attempted to co-opt the uprising. To this day, right-wingers in Hungary try to claim the event as their own. The fascist elements of society didn’t just disappear after the defeat of the Nazis and Arrowcross…(4)

Indeed, some of if not the most targeted victims of the regime were in fact members of the party itself, such as Rajk László. The party leadership felt far more threatened by their own comrades than any other group. Honest communists were silenced and eliminated…(3)
