Hunting a fox with a pack of hounds has been illegal in England and Wales since 2005. However, packs of foxhounds have been allowed to continue trail-hunting, where dogs follow an artificial scent rather than a fox. Animal rights campaigners claim the practice is simply used as cover to continue hunting illegally. The Tiverton vote is the first time that local councillors have rejected the practice and comes after Mr Packham described those who participate in the Boxing Day tradition as “ethically and morally bankrupt sociopathic savages”. Steve Bush, a Labour district councillor, said that Mr Packham had been in touch with him to pledge his support for the motion and Mr Bush read out a statement from the presenter at the meeting, according to local press reports. The motion was passed with 10 votes in favour, two against and eight abstentions. While the town council does not have the legal authority to ban the hunt, which is organised independently, the vote is a blow to supporters. The Tiverton Boxing Day hunt has become increasingly controversial. Last year a petition was signed by more than 4,000 people demanding it be banned and a council motion doing that was rejected by only one vote. Polly Portwin, the director of the campaign for hunting at the Countryside Alliance, said: “The annual Tiverton Boxing Day meet is a much loved festive event that is enjoyed by many and provides invaluable support to local rural businesses.
