Yes I was very impressed when I first heard the quote and it continues to be a strong argument for veganism.

However, despite this it is disappointing to see that Bentham is no friend of veganism. A few lines earlier he had written, “There is very good reason why we should be allowed to eat such non-human animals as we like to eat: we are the better for it, and they are never the worse”. Both reasons false

Given what we are learning about animal communication, perhaps this can be rephrased …

We call them dumb animals, but they are not. Rather, it is we who are deaf to their words; they cannot tell us how they feel, but they do not suffer less because we will not hear

I found the study gave a very positive message: when looked at from nutrition, health, environmental and cost perspectives, unprocessed plant based foods performed best and processed plant based foods still offered substantial benefits compared to animal products
