Tree planting on plot 7 today took a dark turn 👻👻 but regardless of the ghosts & ghouls we managed to plant 100s of wet woodland trees 👻👻🧛‍♀️

Happy #Halloween🎃 from the VLM 👻

BREAKING NEWS 📢🥳🎉

The Vegan Land Movement just removed a 9th area of land from dairy farming & monoculture grazing. This land will never be used to farm animals again & will become a safe haven for struggling wild species. 🥳

Thank you to everyone who donated & shared. 🙏💚

3 DAYS TO THE AUCTION OF ANOTHER DAIRY GRAZING LAND FIELD 📢

The target has been met but anything over will give the VLM more leverage and better chances of winning 🙏To lose for the sake of a few £100 will be devastating.

Please donate whatever you can 🙏🦦

The Somerset Levels is an important area for otters & to create a completely wild habitat next to this river would help with their safety. To create a wild haven for otters & other species who are struggling here would be wonderful - will you help us?

We were in 2 minds about going for this plot as we only have a week to fundraise for it, but we have found out information which has changed things.
Local sabs have now visited this riverside site & reported back that there are signs of OTTER activity.

Dear friends. The VLM is at Alexandra Palace in London at the Vegan Life Live 3 day event 🥳

Lots of great & important conversations with like-minded vegans with a shared vision. Wonderful food too! Come by & see us on stand V57.

We saw many goldfinches and blackcaps. It was amazing how many more birds there were this year 😍🐦

We are also very grateful to the brilliant volunteers who gave up their time for these Species Counts. A special thank you to volunteer Steven & his wife, Jen for the many hours of work, helping to identify species & to create the VLM spreadsheets 🦋🐝🦎

This incredible surge in biodiversity was only made possible due to the land being freed from harmful farming industry practices. We are incredibly grateful to all who have donated, as it is you who have helped create these rich new habitats for struggling wildlife species 🦔🦡🦋

Trees glorious trees 🌳
Lots of the native trees we have planted are growing well, especially alder, willow and birch. Below is a collage of some of these trees on plots 2, 4, 5 and 6. The center image is of an alder producing seeds on plot 4. This was wonderful to see 🌳
September 4, 2025 at 3:39 PM
We also surveyed plot 2 this year, after not managing to access it last year. It's only accessible around the edges due to the density of growth. Great news here - we identified an otter 💩(spraint) on a fallen log & the willows we planted in 2021 have started to become mature 🌳
September 4, 2025 at 3:39 PM
During this visit we also undertook a baseline species count of plot 7 removed from dairy farming in July 2024 and plot 8, removed from dairy farming on the 14th of May this year. There are several badger setts near plot 8 and we recorded one possible badger latrine there 🦡
September 4, 2025 at 3:39 PM
We saw many butterflies & moth species this year too. Below is a selection of the butterflies & a few of the moths photographed and recorded 🦋

Butterflies have increased by 60% since last year

Below are the birds seen or heard & identified by a local ornithology expert, Pete, who recorded their songs & knew where to look for certain birds. Most birds were also verified by using the Merlin bird song app.
Bird species have greatly increased (by 73.9%) since last year 🦉
September 4, 2025 at 3:39 PM
This year we identified 10 different mammal species. We saw each deer species (Muntjac, Roe, Fallow & Red) as well as a wood mouse. The badger, otter & hedgehog were accurately identified by their scats & moles were identified by their countless molehills 🦔🦦🐹🦡🦊🦌
September 4, 2025 at 3:39 PM
Overall, we recorded an incredible 217 animals and 197 plants including:

3 reptile species
7 mammal species
139 insect species
40 bird species
8 Gastropoda species (snails and slugs)
19 arachnid (spider) species
1 amphibian species

A 57.2% increase in fauna species since 2022.
September 4, 2025 at 3:39 PM
Important note: We were incredibly careful & carried out these counts with great sensitivity. This species survey was undertaken gently & without harm. As you can see by the photo of the tiny toadlet below, we had to be very careful where we slowly walked 🐸

We had three glorious days recording species & below is a collage of all of the life we photographed & identified by their various markings, via sound recordings & photographs of droppings 🦎🐝🕷️🦋🦡🦉🦔🐸🦊🦌🌼🌿🌱🌳

Dedicated volunteers gently made their way over each site recording species. Take a look at the incredible image of a Thistle Gall Wasp photographed by Anne-Marie & a Red Soldier Beetle photographed by Cleve😍 Can you spot the Orbweaver Spider hiding next to Red Soldier Beetle?🕷️
