A seasonal reimagining for this week’s Coffee Break Classics. A reminder that change is possible, compassion matters, and it’s never too late to choose a kinder path.

Merry Christmas to all :)

My new Coffee Break Classic: East of Eden.

Steinbeck said all his earlier work was “practice for this,” and I agree, I’ve enjoyed many of his books and this one is a masterpiece.

A pruned branch for timshel: the belief that we may choose our path.

Coffee Break Classics: One Hundred Years of Solitude.

A yellow butterfly felt like the right symbol; gentle, surreal and part of the book’s magic. I used a warm ochre tone to echo the story’s dreamy atmosphere. A strange and beautiful novel that lingers long after you finish it.

Coffee Break Classics: The Secret Garden.

This week’s cover uses a single seedling; small, fragile and full of promise. A quiet symbol for Mary’s own transformation. Set on a soft mossy green, it felt like the right way to capture the heart of the story.

Coffee Break Classics:
Toni Morrison by The Bluest Eye

A story that begins with marigolds that would not bloom.
A meditation on beauty, innocence, and the quiet harm of being unseen.

Coffee Break Classics: Let the Right One In – John Ajvide Lindqvist

A vampire story that isn’t really about vampires.
A frozen playground, a swing, and a friendship that defies the dark.

Those who know will recognise it. Those who don’t might want to.

“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again…”

The crimson rhododendrons that surround the estate aren’t just flowers, lush, overpowering, and almost suffocating. They embody Rebecca herself, beautiful on the surface but invasive, choking out everything else that tries to grow.

Happy Halloween.

This week’s Coffee Break Classic ‘I Am Legend’ by Richard Matheson.
A haunting story of loneliness, survival, and the monsters we make of ourselves.
(Much better than the film(s).)

“The strength of the vampire is that no one will believe in him.”
Richard Matheson, I Am Legend

Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes: a carnival of fear, childhood, and temptation. The carousel horse, stripped back to its shape, still heavy with dread.
