PFP: drawing of a woman with purple hair & sunflowers
Background: a great-horned owl
Another weekend, another hike. This time we found a black and gold flat millipede, bane berry, a toad, and chicken-of-the-woods.

Another hike this weekend. Saw a tiger beetle, jack-o-lantern mushrooms (they glow in the dark at night!), cardinal flower, and a wasp nest.

On Sunday, we went for a 3 mile hike up and over rocks & ridges, across meadows & creeks, looking out for copperheads & frogs (depending where we were).

Little V told me “it was the best weekend ever.”

Over the weekend I took my child “camping.” We went canoeing on Saturday, & we saw osprey, green herons (2!), turtles, swans, fish, & blooming lily pads. Then we “camped” in a tent in the backyard. We counted bats & fireflies, & roasted marshmallows. Then we hooted w/ the nearby barred owl.

Four mile hike up and down hilly, rocky terrain. Lots of fun mushrooms and beautiful shady, mossy places.

I didn’t read Jane Eyre until I was in my thirties, but oh boy had I wished I read it sooner. What a story! Beautiful words & dynamic, interesting protagonist.

I did not need daytime television with this book. The drama is incredible & the art fantastic. One of my favorites as a Greek myth kid.

It took me six months to finish reading The Mists of Avalon because I would get so incensed I’d throw it across the room & let it sit there for a week or 2 before commencing.

Look at my new friend. She’s the cicada killer that’s been tunneling next to my patio. She’s resting on the head of a giant marigold, so do not be fooled by the size here. She’s a big bug.

My broody hen looks sleepy in this photo but I promise you she is glaring at me for daring to poke around underneath her.

Turns out it’s a cicada killer! I love these wasps. Their size is intimidating but they’re hardly interested in people. They bury cicadas in their burrows for their young to feast upon. The adults eat nectar and sugary sap and such.

Something was digging around my pepper pots and adding dirt to my patio. It didn’t look like a chipmunk’s burrow leavings, but I did find out who lives here.

We have progress! Sadly, one chick/egg seems to have gone missing. I looked below for any possible shell or chick, and didn’t see a thing. #birds

Look at this cutie on a sunflower leaf. Some kind of leafhopper that I am unable to identify at the moment. #invertes

Only got one photo, but the child found this live cicada nymph in the soil. He or she is lying on their back in this photo. Wish I had taken more photos! #invertes

I’ve been waiting for a monarch to appear at my milkweed. I don’t get as many as I used to. But three great spangled fritillaries hung out for a few days, and they were absolutely delightful to watch. #invertes #butterflies 🌱

14. This is the love of my life.

6. I keep chickens and ducks and a single goose. They make me happy to see them waddling about being birds.

A red-spotted purple resting on the leaves of a pagoda dogwood.

This butterfly species mimics the poisonous pipevine swallowtail.

A few years ago, I planted pearly everlasting in one of the pollinator gardens. Despite its name, it did not last.

But a couple years later, I noticed it growing in the cracks of my patio. So I let it.

This year, it’s getting a little bushy & producing flowers. And I have visitors! #invertes

I’m a little late in the season, but I’ve been super busy. Today I’m seeding sunflowers. I’ll rip off the bottom of these pots when I put them in the ground to help them stretch their roots. I still have to pull all the weeds from the intended plot, but I can’t wait!
