Persistence pays off Steve - looks like glutinosae
November 15, 2025 at 4:14 PM
You can see the hymenopteran pupa but it is useful to see it dorsally and ventrally.
Looks like it has the dark ventral plate of glutinosae?

Larva is in not too good a condition Steve so can’t tell the species

Crimson Speckled Steve
I’m jealous / only seen them in Spain!

It does look like messaniella Ollie. It is known on Birch. Nice find

Well done for looking for leaf mines.
This, unfortunately, is a green patch where the leaf hasn’t browned yet. S tityrella forms amazing zig zag mines on beech as in this photo
Keep looking and you will find it!

Easier to see in a surface view of the back of the mine

If that is a slit underneath then it’s Ectoedemia subbimaculella
November 10, 2025 at 2:03 PM
No slit at base of mine and older mine - Ectoedemia albifasciella Ruth

Poplar species are tricky Steve with hybrids and suckers all looking differently
November 9, 2025 at 1:28 PM
The leaf doesn’t look like Grey Poplar Steve as it hasn’t got such round edges
It’s probably argyropeza on a larger aspen leaf?

Easy Steve - there will be nothing left for others to find soon!
Great spots ✔️

Thanks James
I’ll take a look

We’ve got that tree too. One of my favourite apples, along with Norfolk Royal Russet

Try and find the mines now?
November 7, 2025 at 8:42 PM
You are on a roll Steve! Well done. You will now spot this species more often

All turbidella Steve - double track frass and petiole mine
An uncommon miner
Try and rear? Usually straightforward- mine are at the side of the garage for the winter
