Gonna have to lower the Guantanamo McDonalds flag to quarter-mast at this rate!
A screenshot of a quote-tweet taken from Twitter. The quoter is "Thoughts on this? @lib_crusher", quoting a tweet from "Carol Rosenberg @carolrosenberg". The quoted tweet shows a McDonalds restaurant on the Guantanamo Bay US military base, with three flag poles outside of it. The poles, from left to right, hold (presumably) a military unit flag, the US flag and a flag with the bright red and yellow McDonalds logo. All 3 flags are at half-mast. The text of the tweet is "The flags were lowered last night by order of President Trump after the killing of Charlie Kirk and will stay at half-staff on this base in southeast Cuba until sunset on Sunday." The tweet quoting that has added the text "The Guantanamo McDonalds flag is at half-mast to honor Charlie Kirk", quite possibly one of the most ridiculous yet succinct sentences possible to construct in 2025.

The thing with saying "There was, briefly, an attempt at a national mood of somberness. The president ordered flags across the nation to be lowered to half-staff." is that I don't know that that ever happened, because even that immediately crossed through solemnity into farce:

Ye gods, this is the best they're offering: "a sense of hope", "a belief that things can and will get better". No actual change, no improvements, only vibes.
