There’s a comment on the NYT story from someone self identifying as a student in the class that gives a different view. Of course… are they actually in the class? Who knows

I’m an educator and I try to create spaces for uncomfortable conversations. It’s not always easy to curate readings and try to write open ended prompts. Wearing a pin can signal solidarity and safe place but it can also signal opposition. It’s difficult balance. I’m not sure they succeeded here

I am well aware that the opinions of Jews about Israel & its policies towards Palestinians are actually more nuanced than the US population as a whole.

My reading of the law suit (link in NYT article) is that the students in that class felt that there was only 1 acceptable view in the class. 1/2

And Netanyahu doesn’t have majority support in Israel and yet he is driving its actions

We’re not going to agree on this.

I agree that Palestinians deserve a free homeland. I agree that Israel’s military actions in Gaza are horrific. But I see valid genetic & historic claims for Jews & Palestine

I’m skeptical of 1 secular state. For one thing Hamas states it wants Islamic rule in the ME. In the other side, there are hard core zealots who want to raze Gaza to the ground.
Two state solution is viewed positively by many Israelis & Palestinians, although not w/I issues (eg, Jerusalem)

I think that depends how you define Palestine. 2-state solution —> yes
But I don’t think all settlers in N. America should asked to pack up and go back to Europe, Africa, Asia, and it doesn’t seem reasonable to move all Israelis to wherever their ancestors were living in <1948 or < 1919 etc

?? Genuinely confused.

Suppose a teacher is wearing a button that says trans rights are human rights and then assigns a debate on whether gender affirming care should covered by insurance.

I’m not saying the viewpoint is incorrect, but I do argue the assignment may not be appropriate

If the teacher then assigns a paper on whether Russia should withdraw from Crimea, then yes

Especially in a high school class, that’s a bad move given the power imbalance

(And yes, Russia should get out of Ukraine and the Israeli government should stop bombing Gaza)

environments.
But if a teacher is wearing a big cross necklace and then tells a class they are going to debate whether intelligent design should be taught along with evolution in a class, at least some students are going to feel stifled.

Wearing the cross isn’t anti science but suggests bias

I was responding to the excerpted quote in which the teacher suggested that because they were from a Jewish family that it would be ridiculous to have their choice of assignment questioned.

Feeling discomfort is often part of a good learning environment, so not arguing for completely “safe” 1/2

If the teacher is wearing a free Palestine pin then it’s not really an open conversation. There is a power imbalance there

And yet better than the remake

I’m happy when my students go work outside of STEM. They bring great analytical/ thinking/ communication skills. I don’t think the degree a person gets at 21 years old should lock them into a narrow career path. Do the people who pursue other jobs regret their degree?

This isn’t what I see. I don’t watch 24 h/d but as an Ali Velshi fan, I notice when he is on. I have been pleased that Velshi is on the ground in Israel. I see his reports a lot. I’ve heard anchors refer to him as a co-anchor. I see MSNBC using Velshi at his best. sitting at a desk is over rated.
