Man kan fornemme vreden i Morten Mejses blik fordi bageren igen, igen, igen har udsolgt for det brød han er sendt i byen efter.

If conditions for migrant workers in Saudi Arabia mirror those in Qatar, the human cost of building NEOM and other mega projects will be immense. FIFA’s decision to award the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia highlights the grim reality behind these "grand visions".

Finally, the open letter from European Parliament politicians:

9/ FIFA’s World Cup in Saudi Arabia isn’t just football. It’s a mirror of how rotten the sport has become at the highest level. Let’s not allow FIFA and federations like DBU to call this “business as usual.” Football is worth fighting for – but only if we fight together.
December 17, 2024 at 9:13 PM
8/ Football should unite us, but on the global stage, it’s in freefall. Corruption, human rights abuses, and sportswashing go unchallenged. We, the fans, have a responsibility: We must ask questions, hold federations accountable, and insist that values are not for sale.
December 17, 2024 at 9:13 PM
7/ EU parliamentarians are warning FIFA and demanding action: Protect migrant workers, stop discrimination, and insist on sustainable commitments. But where are the football federations? DBU? Their silence is also a failure - a refusal to stand up to injustice.
December 17, 2024 at 9:13 PM
6/ Football’s values? Sold long ago. Today, it’s not about the game, clubs, or fans - it’s about billion-dollar contracts, oil companies, and regimes with blood on their hands. While we hope for the best, FIFA continues to dig the sport’s grave.
December 17, 2024 at 9:13 PM
5/ Infantino promised transparency and democratic processes etc..

Now, critical questions are gone, press conferences are nonexistent, and comment sections are closed. Instead, Saudi Arabia’s “vision” is celebrated. Who still believes FIFA works for anything other than its own interests?
December 17, 2024 at 9:13 PM
4/ The football we love is being exploited. At the highest level, it’s no longer about sport but a tool for authoritarian regimes to gloss over their brutal realities. Sportswashing works because FIFA and national federations allow it to happen.
December 17, 2024 at 9:13 PM
3/ DBU and other federations hide behind empty phrases about dialogue and cooperation. But where is the line? When workers die? When journalists are murdered? When regimes use sports to whitewash their brutality? FIFA’s World Cup isn’t just football. It’s politics, money, and cynicism.
December 17, 2024 at 9:13 PM
2/ 13.4 million migrant workers are the backbone of Saudi Arabia’s massive construction projects. They work in appalling conditions, often unpaid, in extreme heat, and with no rights. Thousands will pay with their lives - just as we saw in Qatar.
December 17, 2024 at 9:13 PM
1/ FIFA’s decision on December 11th is a punch in the face to everything football should represent. Human rights, workers' rights, and transparency are trampled to fill FIFA’s coffers. Saudi Arabia bought the world’s biggest sporting event.

Is this Neom right now? Mental.

Hvis INGEN skyder det samme sted tredje gang, så er det da et oplagt sted at skyde.
December 14, 2024 at 5:44 AM
This isn’t about Ronaldo vs Messi - both are tied to Saudi Arabia's sportswashing. Ronaldo plays there for $213M/year; Messi's been a tourism ambassador since 2022.

The real disgrace is FIFA awarding a World Cup to a regime with systemic human rights abuses.

Unægteligt. Virkelig ja! 🥹

Your principled stand is admirable and much needed. Focusing on FIFA through the lens of geopolitics, economics, and human rights ensures the truth gets told. Thank you for holding power to account while reminding us what football should truly represent. Keep up the great work!
