“There's power in stories, though. That's all history is: The best tales. The ones that last. Might as well be mine.”

~ Varric Tethras
“It does, doesn’t it? Funny how some things end up working themselves out on their own…or getting just a little push by yours truly.”

“Even in hindsight, I couldn’t have predicted this and wouldn’t have believed it myself. I guess it was meant to be, just at a different time and place.”
“Oh… I had not thought of it like that. It does seem a mad twist of fate…but a good one. If you had told me those months ago that this might have ever come to pass, I would have called you a liar and meant it.”
Varric chuckled.

“Are you kidding? Fans would go nuts to read a sequel like this come out. A direct follow-up to the Champion finding love with The Seeker that sought him out? I mean, I couldn’t write better shit than this — pun intended.”

“A wise move. Doubtless you would be accused of the entire tragedy despite the facts coming to light. Although I did my part to help sort the truth…”

At this she flushed, looking back at the fire.

“ Are we truly that inspiring?”
“After the disaster with the mage rebellion and the defeat of the Knight-Commander, things were too hot to stick around in the city. We all had to get out of there for our own safety — and sanity.”

“Since then, I hadn’t found anything of interest that inspired me enough to write again. Until now.”

“He is. I can see why he was such a beloved figure of Kirkwall. I am surprised your group parted ways. Did you find no tales in continuing on?”
Varric was actually silent for a moment. He would never admit it out loud, but he thought it was sweet she had come to care for his good friend, Hawke. It began as an obsession to find him, which turned to admiration, now affection.

"Hawke is a great guy," he finally said. "The best I've known."

"You both talk about me quite a lot. I suppose it's expected, seeing as how I'm the one that essentially brought you two together. Sprinkle a few breadcrumbs, The Seeker follows them and comes to a dead end -- until I bring the elusive Champion of Kirkwall right to her doorstep. It's beautiful."
"I'm sure the Inquisition's smith can do some crafting for you. I haven't been here long, but I heard a 'Dagna' can craft some runes as well."

He paused when she did at the sound of her nickname. "Do you like it? I'm not as creative as Varric but, I thought it suited you. Simple, yet to the point."⚜️

"Well said, Seeker. Well said. I like that - couldn't have said it better myself."
“An army of one in such matters does not go far, but he writes many books.” She returned the joke, it felt fresh and freeing. “We could run off and slay a high dragon together. It is fine weather in the hinterlands.Or do you have suggestions?” She raised their hands, turning them to kiss his in kind🛡️

“How can I? I…am still not sure this is not a dream. Perhaps the cruel visions of a demon from the breach…but…such a dream…”
"Who said I didn't? Maybe this 'wise, all-seeing rogue of renown' just wants you to admit it to yourself. You at least deserve that - some self-reaffirmation."

“Such a wise, all seeing rogue of renown. You of all people should well know my call…” Her face relaxed again, a hand reaching up to rub her neck
"By the beards of the Ancestors...I never thought I would hear you mention yourself and 'whimsy' in the same sentence. I suppose there's a first time for everything," he teased.

"So, what is this aforementioned 'recent call' that would provoke you to be whimsical?" He tried to get her to admit it.

Cassandra made a disgusted noise, wrinkling her brow. “I can well be coy. I possess cartloads of whimsy! There has only been little call for it…in some time…”
Varric raised an eyebrow.

"Really? You've no idea what it might be about?"

Both knew what each other was referencing, but danced around it. He playfully gasped.

"Could it be that The Seeker is playing coy about something? Well shit -- I never thought I'd see the day."
February 11, 2026 at 4:05 PM
"Maybe that 'one day' will be sooner than you think. And who knows? That tale may just be writing itself as we speak. Will just need to do a little more observations for inspiration and see where it goes..."
Chuckled.

“Sounds like another tale you may one day write.”
"Then it appears to be working. It's so fascinating to me -- sometimes all someone needs is a little push, then they do the rest on their own."

“I do?” She placed one of her boot heels against the wall casually, not hiding her good mood. “Good to know as well. I do wonder what these so interesting rumors might be…”
"That is...good to know, and quite unexpected of you to say. You seem a bit more...amiable these days, Seeker. And the rumors in question might pertain to a different matter."

“ I could not well ask that you become a person you are not, only that we meet as equals. I do not carry irons with me every day. Despite what rumors may buzz…”
“Fair enough. And yes — I would say that’s a fair assessment. Sometimes I just can’t help myself. Old habits die hard, I suppose.”

"Then it appears to be working. It's so fascinating to me -- sometimes all someone needs is a little push, then they do the rest on their own."
“She certainly seems distracted.”
“Thank you, I appreciate that kudos, especially coming from you. I thought it was clever as well and would help keep The Seeker distracted, at least for a little while.”
February 11, 2026 at 1:27 PM
“Fair enough. And yes — I would say that’s a fair assessment. Sometimes I just can’t help myself. Old habits die hard, I suppose.”
“I *should* know. But certain lies have made me wary of your truth. Perhaps we are now truly ‘on the level’ as your stories would say?”
“Glad to hear it. Hopefully that means I won’t be losing any appendages anytime soon. You should know by now I’m not your typical rogue, dwarf, author or businessman for that matter.”

“I…am fond of your stories. It would be a shame to part you from your writing hand. Spies..aren’t rogues mostly of a solitary nature? You are no crow.”
Varric laughed nervously.

“Oh come now, there’s no need for that. Besides, who said I’m the one doing the spying? Nightingale has her own spies, who says I can’t have mine?”

Varric laughed nervously.

“Yes…who can say? Are you…following me? Have I need of my second sword to poke at rosebushes?” She arched an eyebrow
“I wouldn’t say it was one major event in particular. Who’s to say it wasn’t some little moments here and there that added up to some very interesting accumulative content?”

“Good. Good then. A-as he should. I’m sure he has many adventures to recount to you even since your last meeting.” She stood against the wall near his chair, arms crossed. “I have? Whenever was this event that moved you so?”
“Why, Seeker. You haven’t yet realized that you’ve already inadvertently provided me with inspiration to begin my next novel — sequel. And who said that Hawke wouldn’t be in my next book? It certainly wasn’t me…”

“You are so fond of nicknames it should be as breathing to you. But what inspiration could I lend? Granted the inquisition is yet in it’s start, but Hawke is…a far more interesting figure…”
“Bingo! That’s the one. I was thinking the same. Perhaps I’ll even thank you for your inspiration on my dedication page — or shall I use a pseudonym?”
February 11, 2026 at 4:33 AM

“You speak of ‘The tale of the Champion?’ It is…quite popular. Well worthy of a sequel…” She tapped the toe of her boot on the floor
“Oh, you know the one, Seeker. Could it be the one you’ve re-read the most? The particular book you presented to me the first day we met, and pierced with your knife? Ring any bells?”

“I-have no idea to what you are referring. A sequel? To which book, I wonder…”

Cassandra looked away to the fire in front of his customary chair in the main hall
“Our?” Varric raised an eyebrow.

“Whoever could you be referring to, Seeker?” He smirked again.

“Perhaps. It seems as though you’ve already come up with a title for this…new book. Or shall I say…sequel?”

She sighed.
“You are yet and again so infuriating! What business are the details of our-“
She blinked, considerably less angry.
“Are you…writing another book?”
“Perhaps. Perhaps not. A great writer and businessman never reveals his secrets.”
February 11, 2026 at 2:11 AM
“Greetings, Inquisitor. Well, I’ll leave you to it. Have fun getting to know Hawke, he’s a one-of-a-kind guy. You’ll learn that soon enough. I’ll catch you around.”
"Ah, hello master Tethras."

Straightens her posture and reaches for a handshake.

"A pleasure to meet you, Champion Hawke. May I call you Shane? I have heard many tales of you, especially from our wordsmith here. Welcome to the Inquisition. I have many questions for you, if you've the time."
February 11, 2026 at 12:48 AM
“Perhaps. Perhaps not. A great writer and businessman never reveals his secrets.”
“How. Much. Are you spying again?” Her look did not waiver
Varric flashed that unmistakable smirk of his, then folded his hands together.

“I know enough, Seeker.”

“I know enough, Seeker.”
“I noticed you have been… attentive as of late. How much do you know?” She gave him a halfhearted glare out of custom
The dwarven storyteller looked up at her with a deep exhale.

“Right. For the first time…I couldn’t agree more, Seeker.”
February 10, 2026 at 11:54 PM
“Pardon the intrusion, your Inquisitorialness. I’ve someone to introduce you to — Shane Hawke, the famous Champion of Kirkwall.”
