R.I.P Johnathan Joss

I also want to note the systemic racism at play in regards to the last year of Johnathan Joss’ life.

He was portrayed as “relapsing” or having “mental health episodes” where we now know he was a victim of racist and homophobic harassment that led to the loss of his home, his dogs and his life

Johnathan Joss brought real perspective and authenticity to a role that very easily could have been a real knock on the shows legacy.

I, very much, am happy to know he was able to return to the role a final time before his passing

And in John Redcorn - I saw a complicated and nuanced character who more closely aligned with my father and uncles and cousins than the majority of the stereotypes I saw on television then and now

Johnathan Joss’ work as John Redcorn - himself in representation a complex, complicated but over deeply respectful portrayal of a modern Indigenous man - has long been deeply important to me. One of the first real examples of representation in action I remember seeing

What happened to Johnathan Joss and his husband is not only a despicable example of homophobia in 2025. It’s also the brutal slaying of an Indigenous man in a state AND country that is built on the bones of Indigenous bodies and greased by the blood of Indigenous people.

First things first - R.I.P to a strong, beautiful queer Indigenous man. May you find peace in the clearing at the end of the path.

I don’t think he does the actual killing. He just eats the bodies.
