Greenland and the Faroe islands have a lot of autonomy and could almost be considered independent
The reason they are still part of Denmark is largely economic (Faroe islands almost went bankrupt in 1992) and defensive (Greenland is currently America's prime target)

But "heritage" goes beyond belonging somewhere. You can always find belonging with friends and family, but to feel connected to a (or several) group(s) of people is something you do through heritage.
Germans, who actually have regional cultures and identities, can feel connected thusly.
