Xenogears is extremely an experience, that's for sure. A game I definitely think everyone should play at least once, and the pinnacle of RPG design excess in the late 90's.

Xenogears, very much so. And it does avert the tragic ending although there's a lot more that can be said on it. Xenoblade 3 looks to model itself significantly after Xenogears in the core relationship conceit.
