It is not emulation, it just directly translates system calls from windows/directx etc. to linux/vulkan/opengl. Performance is almost never impacted by Wine (and thus Proton) but integration with the OS will improve when compiling native.

Main thing would be proper wayland (modern display server) support, but since Proton is also making huge strides with that its also unlikely to be an issue in the future. Overall tho, if you want proper integration into the OS, especially file system, compiling native for steam runtime is best

Generally, since Wine Is Not an Emulator, performance etc. is not really affected by running under proton and stuff like mods generally expect the windows infra so they likely would require the windows version. Native linux versions can play nicer with the operating system tho.

I made that leap in summer last year and my god I am so fucking happy no longer having deal with microsofts nonsense. Shit on linux doesn't always immediately work flawlessly, but in my experience its so much easier to actually get things working the way you like it when than on windows

literally any project that is able to actually stand in dialogue with first and second wave bm just stands a much better chance of producing something more listenable than the 50th guy trying to "modernize" the sound
