For many decades, Freiburg has been expanding tram lines and bike paths, enlarging and beautifying pedestrian zones, optimizing traffic lights, and improving legal regulations.
These efforts have been a great success: 79% of all trips are made by bicycle, bus, train, or on foot—the best in Germany.

The first of its kind in Germany, a 300 metre stretch of cycle path in Freiburg has been covered with a roof made of 912 photovoltaic solar panels.
Not only does it protect cyclists from wind, sun, and rain, but it makes use of valuable real estate to generate 280 MWh of renewable energy each year.
