Interesting! The agentive preference that modding exploits is undoubtedly a sub-dimension of the "Experimenting" category (perhaps precisely "Tinckering"), but there also seems to be a social dimension that is not yet covered by the model and that we should definitely integrate in a future version 👍

or a slightly more “meta” activity (something that enables new actions to be implemented).

We're in the process of defining new items for the “extended” version of the DEEP questionnaire, and we'll certainly think about integrating modding into it - thanks for the suggestion!

... which consists of experimenting with and/or enabling the realization of new or as yet undetermined goals. Now, the DEEP model is a model for characterizing in-game actions, and it remains to be determined whether modding is indeed an “in-game action”

Thank you. It's a good (and difficult) question! There are in-game actions that the DEEP model doesn't yet account for, such as “wandering” or “tinckering” (see Edgar's thread on this below). I believe that modding falls under one of these exploratory actions...

The DEEP model could better distinguish between exploration with known outcomes and exploration with unknown outcomes. This distinction could help refine our understanding of exploratory behavior in games and real environments.

super interesting, thanks for the reference!

Bonus track: we plan to develop a video game based on the principles of the DEEP model and the results of our study. Here's the first image!

At the end of the test, you'll have a wealth of information about your gamer profile. You can also download your GPT-generated DEEP card once you've completed the test. Here's mine!

To see for yourself, you can take the DEEP test on the online platform (the-deepmodel.fr) we've created for the occasion (@BeyondGamesDev)! You can also decide whether or not you want to share your results with us, in order to improve our model.

In short, we have developed a model (DEEP) to characterise the diversity of gaming preferences, based on the assumption that this diversity reflects differences in the way agents use and navigate goal hierarchies (and exercise their agency along the way).
