In his second novel, Matthew Stover sets his rag-tag group of mercenaries against a bunch of desert tribes and their weird god they keep in a box who are besieging the city of Jebus. This was probably the fifth book of his I read, and absolutely not a historical novel, but damn is it great.

I'm not that smart or even that educated and this still reflects my lived experience in the construction trades. Very nearly exactly this was a common refrain, even in my apprenticeship classes, sometimes by people who actually had a degree (something I don't have).
For a time I considered going to work in a steel mill. A friend who worked for U.S. Steel in Gary dissuaded me. "Staughton, he told me, you could be in the mill twenty- five years and people would still say: Let's see what the Professor thinks.' To be honest, I usually side-step the controversy by maintaining that it's less that I'm (WI) midwestern, and more that the real useful grouping is as a Great Lakes state.

Did I make a roleplaying faction based on the Great Lakes Compact and also make a flag for it? Maybe. Okay, yes.

Toss up between this book we had for German 4/5 that described a grunge girl I found attractive as "ein schlampiges Mädchen," and a fifth grade science books that had the following poem at the beginning of a chapter that I've been able to recite from memory for the past 28 years...
