🌊 Z is for zooplankton! Limnology sampling on Lake Aleknagik in Alaska allows the Alaska Salmon Program to records long-term changes in environmental conditions associated with climate warming, which has knock-on effects on salmon and other aquatic species.

🔬Evidence-based program helps students see themselves as scientists.

🌊SAFS Prof. Jose Guzmán wanted to help bridge the gaps that undergraduates faced in participating in research, and that graduate students faced in mentoring. And so, the IBIS program was born.

🧬Brb, busy genetic metabarcoding!

🔬Arial (PhD) & Mollie (BS) were in the lab barcoding DNA in a manner that allows for the simultaneous identification of many taxa within the same sample.

🐋🦭Why? To study marine mammals, including Cook Inlet beluga whales & Arctic bearded seals.

🐟🧪 What brought a group of high schoolers to SAFS to teach a lesson on Pacific salmon and chemicals?

👩‍🏫 It started in 9th grade biology class with an interest in local research, and led to designing a lesson plan on the effects of 6PPD-quinone on salmon.

🦀🌿🌊 Muckin' around. During low tide at Padilla Bay on a bright day in early May, you could find a class of UW undergraduates exploring the largest contiguous seagrass ecosystem in the lower 48. Why? To collect data to assess the habitat of value of seagrass.
