Looking at the chart from the previous post, you’ll notice there are six columns. In the top row of each column is a vowel sound. There are 6 vowels in Cherokee thus, 6 columns. These are: a, ah - e, A as in way - i, ee as in geese - o, oh - u - oo as in smooth - v, uh as in huh.

Cherokee is a syllabic based language. Each syllable has its own written symbol as shown in the attached chart.

I wish to make clear that I am not a tribal elder, medicine person nor even a registered member of any federally recognized tribe. Though native blood lines are in my heritage and though I’ve spent many years around native communities, I am just a man sharing some of his experiences. Nvwatohiyadv

Osiyo. Tohitsu (toe-hee’-jew)

That means hello, how are you?

You may sometimes see me post something in the English syllabic equivalent of the Cherokee syllabary. For example Osiyo (oh’-see-yoh’) which means “hello.” Cherokee is structured in syllables. Each syllable has its own written symbol. I may post a few words and phrases. Dodadagohvi (later all y’all)

I probably should put up a different picture. The current one was taken 10 years ago. I’ve since aged in appearance and quit shaving. Here’s one much more current:
