During the Islamic Golden Age in the 9th century, Baghdad was not only the political & cultural capital of the Abbasid Caliphate but also a center for scientific discovery. Caliph al-Ma’mun, passionate about advancing knowledge, ordered the construction of the 1st observatory in Baghdad 828 AD.

Al-Rashid appointed the renowned Persian physician, Jibrail ibn Bukhtishu, to oversee the hospital's creation. Drawing from Greek, Persian & Indian medical knowledge, the hospital offered free medical care to all, regardless of background and became a center for medical research and education.
