tl;dr: We’re exhausted. Work is much harder with administration opaque and sources afraid to speak. But stakes are high and our work is critical. We need to find ways to get inside to report on what the administration is doing and track the toll. We also need to take care of ourselves.

Many writers of long form science pieces write stories in chunks, interspersing characters with science or statistics. It's easier to write and digest. But Ferris said he resists this and tries hard to weave. "I'm always worried about stories that feel too blocky and not interconnected," he said.
